Want to start an online business, but don’t have the confidence or motivation? Been trying to make money online for a while, but getting discouraged? You’re not alone, we’ve all been there.
No matter what business, project, or task you are doing, there are times when you will lose the motivation to continue or feel like you are failing. So what can you do? If you start changing your mindset for success, you will succeed. If I can, I know you can!
Let’s Face It, It’s Hard To Stay Motivated
When I first started my online business, I knew I had everything in place–the right hosting and training platform with Wealthy Affiliate, a niche for my website that I was passionate about, and a family who fully supported my goals.
I was well aware of the fact that I’d need to be committed, work hard, and spend the time necessary to succeed. It wouldn’t be easy to create a great body of content for my website, get it ranked well in the search engines, and monetize my site for profits, but I was ready to get started!
The first couple of months were great, and I made good progress. What a great feeling it was to see my first post get indexed by Google! As I built my site out, there was so much pride in seeing what I had created, and it just made me want to write more.
But by the third and fourth month, my enthusiasm began to slip. I was still working full time, taking care of our grandson a few nights a week, and keeping up with my responsibilities around the house.
It began to get harder finding the time to write articles, do research, and I was getting less and less sleep. Instead of writing two to three posts a week, I was just getting in one.
Even though I knew it would take time, I didn’t feel like I was getting results from all my hard work and that made it hard to stay motivated!

What Thomas Edison Said That Got Me Back On Track
To this day, I don’t remember what I was browsing on the web that led me to a quote by Thomas Edison that was told in a 1910 biography. I’ll just call it fate!
Edison had been working on storage batteries and not had any success yet with what he wanted to accomplish. A friend of his, Walter S. Mallory, relayed this conversation,
“I said: ‘Isn’t it a shame that with the tremendous amount of work you have done you haven’t been able to get any results?’ Edison turned on me like a flash, and with a smile replied: ‘Results! Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! I know several thousand things that won’t work!‘”
That quote by Edison made me sit up and take notice! Did I really think that the people in this world who became successful didn’t have busy lives and responsibilities, too?
Did they continue to work hard and keep going even when seeing no results? Did they fail over and over and still believe in themselves and their goals? Of course they did!
So if everyone has challenges to face to become successful, what is the difference between people who succeed and who fail? Mindset, pure and simple.
How Mindset Is The Difference Between Success And Failure
Your mindset is the factor that determines if you’re going to take a step forward or stand still. As excited as I was to start my online business and achieve my goal of quitting my full time job to work from home, I wasn’t keeping a determined mindset.
A determined mindset is one that will take any obstacle and turn it into an opportunity to get better. People have many different reactions when they hit a lack of motivation or a sense of failure on a project or task. Some have negative reactions such as:
- Making excuses
- Avoiding the project altogether
- Blaming others for making it difficult for them
- Being envious of those who are successful
Those who choose to be negative in this situation will often fail and quit altogether. I realized that I was guilty of the first two by making excuses about having no time and being tired and by avoiding writing posts and working on my website.
So I researched the mindset of successful people when faced with motivational problems, and here are the positive reactions they have:
- Realizing that failing is not an end, it is another step on the way to success
- Working harder
- Searching for ways to work smarter
- Remembering the reasons for starting the project and it’s benefits
- Engaging others, such as family or mentors, for assistance
Those who choose to be positive will often succeed because they have the mindset of a doer–of a winner!
Making Your Mindset Decision
So faced with my slipping motivation and fear that I was failing, I had to make a decision about what my mindset would be.
The reasons I had for wanting to have a profitable online business were very strong–to quit my full-time job, work from home, and have more time for my family.
The answer was a no-brainer–I was going to be a winner! So here’s the decisions I made:
- I resolved to make my website a place where visitors could find informative and engaging content
- I set a realistic goal for how many posts I could regularly write each week
- I set a regular time for working on my online business and treated those hours as I treated my regular job
- I scheduled the tasks during my work time, such as how long I would research an article, write content, and work on posting to social media
- I talked with my family and delegated some of the household chores to free up time for my business and get more sleep!
Changing my mindset to being productive and positive was just what I needed to jump start my motivation and get me rolling again.
The funny thing was that I felt like I was working on my online business less, but actually producing more! I was working smarter and handling all of my responsibilities better.
Today, I’m just working part time and well on my way to retiring early. I still have times when I face challenges while trying to expand my business, but I know that my attitude will be what determines my success or failure.

You Can Start Changing Your Mindset For Success Today

“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”
How do you overcome a lack of motivation? If you have any tips, I’d love to have you share them in the comments below!
Thank you for this oh so timely post about Mindset. All your words here ring true for me as I make a comeback after a 6 month lay off that I am totally responsible for. ‘No Excuses’ Previously I would have outlined all the reasons and excuse why I haven’t been active. However, today and for the rest of my life I will be totally responsible for everything that I do or don’t do..’No Excuses’
It is a freedom that I have never known before, and it is the truth. Wonderful reminder after a month back on the keyboard. So grateful!!
Thank you
Paul
I’m glad you’ve found it as helpful as I did! The one thing that I’ve learned as I got older was that so much in my life is truly based on choices that I made. Things happen that I can’t control, but I have control over all of my actions and attitudes in response to those things. It’s actually been really liberating!
Hello Janelle. Thank you for sharing this post on the topic that encourages me to change my mindset for success so that I will success. As we all should know, the mind is the power engine house of any man. It can be used in negative ways or to our own advantage too. A positive mindset will see failure as only a bend and not an end of life goals.
Best regards!
I totally agree, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!
Wow, this post is superb. Thomas Edison has a great sense of humour; he failed some thousand of times and the results then was that he learnt thousands of ways that are not yielding good success. Impressive.
S I am embarking on my business next year. I need some money to spend on it; almost a thousand US dollars. With the right mindset and with my goal broken down into little pieces, I am almost getting 1/3 of my budget; this I know, nothing is impossible with a positive mindset.
Good vibes!
I love “nothing is impossible with a positive mindset”, and I wholeheartedly agree!
This is absolutely a great motivational post, wow!how can one succeed without having a good mindset towards your goals, really I also find the quote very inspirational ,because so many people are just working without having a good results, but with having a good positive mindset with whatever you are doing trust me you getting there.
People like Edison were successful not just for their great minds, but for their unfailing positive attitude that they would succeed no matter what. I’m using that to inspire me to keep going and never give up!
I like that quote by Thomas Edison and I can relate. I’ve built 2 websites so far that have failed to make money, but have learned why what I did before wasn’t working, and so instead of thinking that I have failed twice I can think of it as knowing now what doesn’t work and use that knowledge to build my 3rd website, avoiding the same mistakes and on a quicker path to success hopefully. I have reduced my job to part time hours and really set my mind on making this work, my goal is to make enough money via my website to quit my job completely.
I’ve always said that I’ve learned more from my mistakes than from my successes. Good luck with your website, and I have no doubt that you’ll achieve your goal!
Hello Janelle,
Were would the world be if we understood how much our mindset plays
a key role in in everything we take on.
When applied in the business realm, it is even more crucial so the outcome truly depends on
what going on inside our minds.
Your article did a great job depicting this reality. Thank you for that your diligence in researching this.
Understanding how much a person’s mindset plays into their success in every way is truly life changing. Once that realization happens, there’s no stopping them!
Hey Janelle:
You’re absolutely right, you know. Mindset is almost the whole of a thing.
For myself, I maintain my motivation by proceeding with curiosity. It’s like I ask myself (and the universe), Okay…what happens if I do THIS?
If what I try doesn’t work, then I’ve learned yet another new thing not to do and I go find something else that might work instead.
It’s the Edison thing all over again.
Proceeding with curiosity–I love that! What a great way to keep yourself motivated, thanks for stopping by!
